Our heart beats for Newtown

It took us a long time to have an clearer idea about Australia. We’ve been travelling for so many kilometres in the past few months and we are still investigating which bit is our favourite. We can’t tell this quite yet, as the adventure isn’t finished, but we have a pretty good idea of which is our favourite area in Sydney, which literally stole our heart: this magic place is Newtown.

And let’s be clear: we did lived in many suburbs! We stay in Bondi as we already mentioned in this journal, and we lived a good amount of time in Redfern too which is the Aboriginal area in the city. Then we explored Chippendale, Kings Cross, Glebe (cool place too – will talk about this later on), Neutral Bay, Coogee, Maroubra, Paddington, Woolloomooloo, Chatswood, Manly, Surry Hills (the best for the yuccie scene), Ultimo, Vaucluse,  etc… Finally Newtown was recommended to us by many friends which were promoting it really well (especially Marco from Papa Pilko and the Binrats). So we went there – too late for our taste – and was definitely love at first sight: I mean, look at the pictures… isn’t it the coolest place?!

We wanted to stay very central and rented this great bright studio inside a traditional Sydney house full of creative people in the beating heart of the area. Here started our adventure.

Newtown is full of shops, bookshops, design places, cafes, memorable street art, hidden gems… it is difficult to describe everything in details we can only say living there is totally awesome. Very close to the city (we were even walking to the centre sometimes), it has everything you may need and there is always someone playing on the street, which makes the atmosphere totally amazing.

Being local in Newtown is exactly what we wanted to live: just walking down the street is a total experience as you can have a blind date with a book at the Elizabeth Bookshop, or have the juicy burger at Mary’s, have a beer with the locals hipsters at Young Henry’s in his secret garden, but there is so much more!

It is so underground but so mystical: here we started our first detox and use of weird Chinese herbs, and expanded our diet and lifestyle with substances such as Chia seeds, Flax seeds, roasted Dandelion instead of coffee, acupuncture, meditation, Japanese Oki Yoga and so on… Newtown brought our spiritual bit out and we did experiment lots of techniques to improve awareness. It may be the people that we met or the situations we found ourselves in… but it was mind blowing.

On a last note, you may have heard that in Sydney you can find the best icecream at Gelato Messina. They have good gelato but you can find the very best gelato in Newtown at the Cow and the Moon instead. Actually their ‘Mandorla Affogato’ is the World Best Gelato which won the best prize at the International Gelato Competition in Rimini (Meg’s hometown)! They have good gelato indeed (although we never managed to taste the World winner as was always sold out). Since we discovered this place, we had gelato every day before leaving the city… But the truth is that we are waiting for Cesare, Meg’s dad, to have the final call… as no one is as good as him in tasting ice cream. We will bring him there soon in November. Stay tuned!
